Despite its convenient location, less than 20-minute drive from Escondido mall, the journey feels like a distant escape from the daily grind. As you traverse winding roads flanked by rolling hills and lush vineyards, the stresses of urban life fade away, replaced by the soothing embrace of nature’s beauty.

Situated in a secluded area, the gate stands tall, offering a sense of exclusivity and privacy. A guard shack and keypad are available for entry, ensuring security and peace of mind. Once inside, a picturesque scene unfolds—a long roadway stretches ahead, leading over a charming bridge and arriving at a spacious parking lot adjacent to a quaint stable. Here, horses, chickens, and other animals roam, adding to the rustic charm of the surroundings. Across from the parking area lies the registration office, where guests can check in and explore a delightful store filled with an array of souvenirs, including soaps, mugs, and other memorabilia. Open until 10 pm, the store is manned by the sweetest and friendliest woman, who works the night shift with a genuine warmth and helpfulness that leaves a lasting impression on visitors.

Our cozy cottage, lovingly dubbed “The Finch,” welcomed us with open arms. This one-bedroom, one-bathroom abode featured two queen-size beds in the bedroom and a queen-sized pull-out sofa in the living room area. the kitchen, equipped with essentials including a small fridge, microwave and an unexpected egg cooker (who knew such a thing existed?), promised culinary adventures galore. And let’s not forget the pièce de résistance—the complimentary breakfast basket, a delightful ode to our beloved Trader Joe’s.

Our cottage overlooked a tranquil water fountain, its soothing sounds providing a peaceful ambiance from our front balcony. While our cottage shared a space with another, we found privacy not lacking, but this is possibly because our neighbors had their fair share of surprises, like the friendly family of mice who decided to join them for the night. This caused them to have to change to a different cottage.

For those inclined towards outdoor cooking, propane grills were available, complete with grilling tools provided by Bandy Canyon Ranch. The bathroom amenities, including shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner, were well-stocked, and the shower water boasted mineral content, providing a healthy and soft experience reminiscent of mountain springs.

However, despite the charm of the cottage, signs of wear and tear were evident, with aged tiles and peeling paint detracting from the overall aesthetic. While these minor imperfections did not dampen our enjoyment, a thorough makeover and improved housekeeping practices would enhance the guest experience.

For those looking for more laid-back fun, there are plenty of other options to choose from including sitting under a beautiful shady tree reading a book or drinking a glass of the locals wine. I will say that the swimming pool was a disappointment due to its unheated and dirty state, the mineral water jacuzzi provided a relaxing oasis amidst the rugged terrain. Animal lovers can take a tour of the sanctuary for a small donation, where they’ll encounter horses, chickens, roosters, and other small animals.

Families visiting on selected weekends throughout the summer can enjoy special activities like Easter egg hunts, adding an extra layer of excitement to their stay. And for those who prefer more active pursuits, bike riding is available, although guests must bring their own bicycles.
